District Staff Assistant

About the Congresswoman:

A 5th generation Washingtonian, U.S. Representative Marie Gluesenkamp Perez was first elected to the U.S. Congress in 2022. The Congresswoman currently serves on the House Committees on Agriculture and Small Business; in addition to serving as Co-Chair of the House Blue Dog Coalition. The Congresswoman’s key issues include supporting rural communities, affordable childcare, supporting skilled work, energy independence, and the right to repair.

Background:

Congresswoman Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington’s 3rd Congressional District seeks to hire a District Staff Assistant for her office in Vancouver, WA. This role is being offered in a full-time capacity. The ideal start date will be Thursday, January 2nd.

Job Expectations:

The District Staff Assistant will be expected to manage the front desk during office hours and assist both the district and D.C. office staff with work as assigned, sometimes including evenings and weekends. Staff Assistants often provide the first impression of the office to constituents, guests, and key stakeholders. The experience gained in the Staff Assistant role will provide a solid foundation to advance into positions of increasing responsibility.

Compensation:

The salary range for this position is $45,000 – $50,000 per year, depending on experience. Employment benefits include medical, dental, vision and life insurance, retirement plans, and other benefits in addition to paid time off, sick leave, and federal holidays.

Job Duties:

  • Provides a welcoming environment and positive first impression of the office to constituents, visitors, and key stakeholders.
  • Preparing materials for the Member’s meetings while in district
  • Assisting staff in preparing, organizing, and staffing meetings while the Member is in district, including providing transportation to the Member between meetings
  • Handles incoming calls with poise, professionalism, and promptness
  • Captures input from constituents on policy matters for the Member office’s consideration and response
  • Ensures constituent casework is distributed to appropriate district staff in an efficient and effective manner
  • Manage programs such as the office internship program, the Congressional App Challenge, and Congressional Art Competition
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements:

  • Effective communication skills for verbal and written correspondence
  • Seeking professional development opportunities, including but not limited to skill-building and interest-driven research/community engagement
  • Valid driver’s license and personal vehicle with auto insurance and excellent driving record
  • Ability to remain calm, professional, and friendly when corresponding with frustrated stakeholders
  • Effective teamwork skills and the ability to support the needs of multiple team members and leaders in the office required
  • Professional demeanor and an upbeat disposition while interacting with visitors, staff members, and stakeholders in a fast-paced, highly dynamic environment
  • Time management skills including the ability to prioritize, and track work status required
  • Attention to detail and willingness to learn

Preferences:

  • Personal ties to Southwest Washington (in-district) are strongly preferred.
  • Prior constituent service or customer relationship management is beneficial.
  • A demonstrated interest in public service.
  • No college degree required, candidates with diverse experiences and education backgrounds encouraged to apply.
