Rep. Gluesenkamp Perez presents Reps. Baumgartner and Randall with “The Chick.”

Today, Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (WA-03) passed off “The Chick” to freshman Reps. Michael Baumgartner (WA-05) and Emily Randall (WA-06), as part of a longstanding bipartisan Washington Delegation tradition.

“The Chick” was first presented to former Rep. Joel Pritchard (WA-01) in 1972, purchased for him by a friend at a charity auction as a gift for his office, because he was a brand new Congressman. Rep. Pritchard didn’t like the painting, but he still hung it up in his office and wanted an honorable way to get rid of it since it was a gift.

Because it was a painting of a chick hatching, he thought it should go to the newest member of the Washington Delegation. It was re-gifted to fmr. Rep. Norm Dicks (WA-06) in 1976, who re-gifted it to fmr. Rep. Mike Lowry (WA-07) in 1979, and so on.

According to the original succession rules for “The Chick,” Rep. Baumgartner will receive the painting for one year, followed by Rep. Randall, who will hold onto the painting for the second year, or until a new member of the Delegation is elected.

Video of the lawmakers’ remarks can be found here.

Each Member of Congress who receives “The Chick” signs the back of the painting before passing it down.

“We’re very excited to welcome Representatives Baumgartner and Randall to our delegation,” said Rep. Gluesenkamp Perez. “I’m grateful we have such a collaborative and spirited Washington delegation, and I’m equally grateful to be getting rid of this gimlet-eyed monstrosity. May it inspire them to think deep thoughts, such as whether the chicken or egg comes first.”

After taking office in 2023, Rep. Gluesenkamp Perez received “The Chick” from Rep. Marilyn Strickland (WA-10).
