WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (WA-03), sent a letter to Postmaster General David Steiner to request regular, reliable delivery of local newspapers in Southwest Washington.

“In an increasingly nationalized media environment, local news matters more than ever. Democracy depends on being connected to your neighbors and independent thinking, local newspapers remain a primary and essential source of information about community events, public safety, and local news,” said Rep. Gluesenkamp Perez. “But over the past month, my constituents in Lewis County have faced issues with the routine delivery of their local newspapers – sometimes going an entire week without receiving a copy. As a result, local press outlets have received angry calls from frustrated customers, or even seen long-time subscribers cancel their subscriptions altogether. The USPS must get to the bottom of what’s causing this problem and fix it as soon as possible.”

Rep. Gluesenkamp Perez’s team has received reports that dozens of households in Lewis County have not been receiving newspapers that they are subscribed to. This is causing widespread frustration, and customer loss for local news outlets. This comes amid a hollowing out of local journalism across our country, especially in rural communities.
