Gluesenkamp Perez Announces 2024 Bigleaf Maple Big Leaf Contest
Today, Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (WA-03) marked the start of fall by announcing her second annual Bigleaf Maple Big Leaf Contest, for residents of Washington’s Third District to seek out the biggest Bigleaf Maple leaf they can find.
Bigleaf Maple trees are found all over the Pacific Northwest, and the contest encourages folks to get outside, enjoy our woods, and learn about the challenges facing the Bigleaf Maple.
The biggest leaf will be displayed for visitors to see in the Congresswoman’s office and showcased online.
Constituents can learn how to enter here, and they should submit an image of their leaf by November 10, 2024, while preserving the original.
“In Southwest Washington, we’re lucky to have sprawling woods that aren’t only breathtaking, but are also vital to our rural economies, recreation, and way of life. With Bigleaf Maple trees facing crown dieback, it’s especially important we appreciate these trees and understand the challenges they’re facing.” said Rep. Gluesenkamp Perez. “Last year, I was excited to see dozens of amazing leaves from all across our district, and the winning leaf is proudly hanging in my office so visitors have a reminder of home.”
Last year’s winning leaf was 23.5 inches, found in Randle by Dirk and Dixie H. In 2023, constituents from four different counties and 15 different towns participated, with their ages ranging from three to 91 years old.
